This week, I’m watching precious metals, oil, and interest rates because together they are sending an important message about the monetary system.
Gold moved back above $4,600, while silver approached $69. Both posted strong gains, and gold’s move above its 200-day moving average suggests this may be more than a short-term safe-haven rally.
The larger issue is confidence. U.S. federal debt is now above $40 trillion, while the Fed is caught between slowing growth, persistent inflation, and the rising cost of servicing that debt. Higher oil prices make the problem worse because energy costs flow through nearly every part of the economy.
The Fed can influence the price of money, but it cannot print energy. If oil stays high, inflation becomes harder to suppress. If inflation stays high, rate cuts become harder. If rates remain elevated, the debt burden grows. And if policymakers respond with lower rates or more liquidity, the purchasing power of the currency comes under pressure.
That is why gold and silver remain so important. Gold reflects confidence in the monetary system, while silver also benefits from strong industrial demand.
My approach has not changed: physical metal is insurance first, investment second, and speculation third. Don’t get distracted by every short-term price move. Watch oil, rates, debt, and above all, confidence. When confidence in paper promises weakens, capital historically looks for assets that cannot be created with a keystroke.
